“Shukr” (شكر) is an Arabic term that translates to “gratitude” or “thanks” in English. In the Islamic context, expressing gratitude is highly valued, and Muslims are encouraged to be thankful to Allah for His blessings and to express gratitude to others.
Gratitude in Islam is not limited to mere verbal expression but extends to one’s actions, thoughts, and behavior. Being grateful is considered a virtuous quality, and the Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude. In several verses, Allah encourages believers to be thankful for His favors, and it is mentioned that gratitude leads to an increase in blessings:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (Quran 14:7)
Muslims are encouraged to be thankful in times of prosperity and patient in times of adversity. Gratitude is expressed through acts of worship, charity, helping others, and acknowledging the blessings bestowed by Allah.
