The phrase “La ilaha illallah” (لا إله إلا الله) is a fundamental declaration of faith in Islam. It translates to “There is no god but Allah” in English. This declaration is known as the Shahada, and it is the testimony of the oneness of Allah and the acceptance of Muhammad as His messenger.
The complete Shahada is:
“La ilaha illallah, Muhammadun Rasulullah.”
Translation: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
Reciting the Shahada is a central tenet of Islamic belief, and it is the foundation of a person’s faith in Islam. It is also the declaration one makes when converting to Islam. The Shahada expresses the core monotheistic belief in the oneness of Allah and the acceptance of His final messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
