From Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 76, Hadith 581:
Narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is I like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith’s bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof.”
From Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Hadith 6221:
Narrated by Abu Musa Ash’ari: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The similitude of good company and that of bad company is that of the owner of musk and of the one (iron-smith) blowing the bellows, and the owner of musk would either offer you free of charge or you would buy it from him or you would (be benefitted) from his sweet smell, but he could ignite nothing with the bellows. And the one (iron-smith) who blows the bellows (i.e., the blacksmith) would either burn your clothes or you shall have to smell in his unpleasant smell.
This hadith illustrates the impact of good and bad company on individuals, using the metaphor of a musk seller and a blacksmith. The idea is that associating with virtuous people is beneficial, just as being near a musk seller either results in obtaining musk or enjoying its fragrance. Conversely, keeping company with those who engage in harmful behavior is likened to being near a blacksmith, where the potential outcomes are negative, such as burning clothes or being exposed to an unpleasant smell.
