The Koutoubia Mosque, an architectural gem of Marrakesh, Morocco, stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. This mosque, also spelled as Kutubiyya or Koutoubia, is not only a place of worship but an iconic symbol of Marrakesh.
Constructed in the 12th century during the Almohad dynasty, the Koutoubia Mosque showcases traditional Moorish architecture. The towering minaret, reaching heights of over 75 meters, is a distinctive feature with its intricate geometric patterns and delicate arabesques. The mosque’s name, “Koutoubia,” is derived from the Arabic word “kutub,” meaning books, as it was originally surrounded by sellers of manuscripts and books.
The exterior of the mosque is adorned with ornate arches, decorative motifs, and bands of ceramic tiles, exhibiting the skilled craftsmanship of the time. The mosque is particularly stunning during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset when the warm sunlight accentuates the reddish hues of its sandstone walls.
Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and located near the bustling Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia Mosque is a focal point in Marrakesh. Its call to prayer echoes through the medina, contributing to the city’s vibrant soundscape.
