“Sabr” (صبر) is an Arabic term that translates to “patience” or “endurance” in English. It is a concept deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and holds great significance in the lives of Muslims.
Patience in Islam is not merely about enduring difficulties with resignation; it also involves maintaining steadfastness, perseverance, and faith in Allah during times of trial and adversity. “Sabr” is considered a virtue and is highly praised in the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
There are several verses in the Quran that emphasize the importance of patience. For example:
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Quran 2:153)
“And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient. Not equal are the companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise. The companions of Paradise – they are the attainers [of success].” (Quran 59:19-20)
The term “Sabr” is often mentioned in the context of facing trials, adversity, and challenges, as well as in maintaining gratitude during times of ease. Muslims are encouraged to be patient in their worship, daily life, and interactions with others, trusting in Allah’s wisdom and seeking reward in the Hereafter.
Practicing “sabr” is seen as an integral part of one’s faith and is considered a means of drawing closer to Allah and attaining spiritual growth.
