“Tawakkul” (توكل) is an Arabic term that translates to “reliance on Allah” or “placing trust in Allah” in English. It is a key concept in Islamic teachings and reflects the idea of surrendering one’s affairs to Allah while taking necessary actions.
Tawakkul involves recognizing that ultimate control and power rest with Allah. While individuals are encouraged to make efforts, plan, and take action, they are reminded that the outcomes are ultimately in the hands of Allah. Trusting in Allah’s wisdom and plan, even when facing uncertainty, is an integral part of the concept of tawakkul.
The Quran often emphasizes the importance of placing trust in Allah. For example:
“And upon Allah, let the believers rely.” (Quran 3:122)
Tawakkul is not passive; it involves active trust and reliance on Allah, coupled with sincere efforts and planning. It serves as a source of comfort, guidance, and strength for believers, especially during challenging times. The balance between taking action and relying on Allah is a central theme in Islamic teachings, encouraging believers to strive for excellence while recognizing their dependence on the Divine.
